Executive Summary

The social and economic significance of entrepreneurship in relation to the

economic growth at the local and global levels are unquestionable.

Entrepreneurship as a scientific discipline is dynamically developing and growing

in importance, but many unresearched areas and unanswered questions remain.

These questions relate both to entrepreneurs themselves, their behavior, future

potential, and motivation for starting a business, but also to the environment that

encourages or inhibits their activities, attitudes and aspirations. Given the

complexity of these issues, the only way to accelerate the research in this area and

its transfer into real life of individual countries is to combine the strengths and

efforts of academic institutions globally.

Such efforts have been undertaken at the global level since 1999 by GERA

(Global Entrepreneurship Research Association). The result of GERA activities is

the world's largest study of entrepreneurship, based on global surveys and research

and published annually. In 2012, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM)
